Tisha B’Av – the solemn holiday

Why is it important?

Tisha B’Av is observed to remember the two destructions of the Temple in Jerusalem. It can also represent other significant atrocities that the Jews have endured over the years (mainly that have occurred on the ninth of Av). To see a historical list of events, click here.

When is it?

This year, it began at sundown on Monday, August 4th and ends at sundown on Tuesday, August 5th. On the Jewish calendar, it always occurs on the ninth day of the month of Av. When it is observed depends on whether or not it falls on Shabbat (the Sabbath).

How is it observed?

First and foremost, it is a day of fasting. There are other activities that Jews are to avoid, such as bathing and wearing leather shoes.The book of Lamentations is read in the synagogues.
